Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cold roasted or boiled chicken
Provides the main protein and the bulk of the salad.
Vinegar
Acidity that seasons the chicken and adds a tangy flavour.
Oil
Fat that carries flavour and keeps the chicken moist.
Tender white celery
Adds crisp texture and a fresh, mild crunch.
Mayonnaise dressing
Adds fat and creaminess that binds the salad together.

The step that matters

Refrigerate the chicken before adding the celery and dressing. Marinating the chilled chicken in vinegar, oil and seasoning lets the flavours soak in. Adding the dressing only after chilling keeps the celery crisp and the mayonnaise from thinning out.

Swap the celery

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chicken, vinegar, pepper):

  1. Garlicfits better
  2. Tarragonfits better
  3. Thymefits about as well
  4. Celerythe original

Fit is the average pairing score against chicken, vinegar, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
