Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Claret
Forms the wine base, supplying most of the flavor and body of the drink.
Lemons
Their juice adds acidity that brightens the wine and balances sweetness.
Sugar
Adds sweetness that softens the acidity of the lemon and wine.
Soda water
Adds fizz and lightens the drink as it is diluted.
Crushed ice
Chills the drink and dilutes it gradually as it melts.

The step that matters

Add the soda water last. Carbonation escapes quickly once liquid is stirred or left standing. Adding the soda at the end, just before serving, keeps the drink fizzy.

Swap the lemon

Fit is the average pairing score against sugar, nutmeg, brandy. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
