Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Tapioca
Swells during soaking and cooking to thicken the milk into a pudding.
Milk
Forms the liquid base that the tapioca thickens into a creamy custard.
Eggs
Yolks enrich and set the custard, while whites whip into a light topping.
Sugar
Sweetens the pudding and helps stabilise the whipped egg white topping.
Shredded coconut
Adds coconut flavour and a chewy texture to the pudding and its topping.

The step that matters

Add the soaked tapioca, egg yolks, sugar, and coconut to the boiling milk. Egg yolks can scramble if they meet very hot liquid without enough stirring. Keep the mixture moving and boil only as long as the recipe states, so the tapioca thickens and the custard stays smooth.

Swap the coconut

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (sugar, milk, egg):

  1. Vanillafits better
  2. Figfits better
  3. Raisinfits better
  4. Coconutthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against sugar, milk, egg. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
