What each ingredient does
- Fresh lime
- Supplies calcium hydroxide, which dissolves into the water to make the clear, alkaline liquid.
- Hot water
- Acts as the solvent that draws lime's compounds into solution.
The step that matters
Carefully bottle all the clear liquid that can be poured off. Lime that has not fully settled leaves particles suspended in the water, which cloud the liquid. Pouring slowly and leaving the sediment behind keeps the clear solution separate from the solid lime.
