Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 400°F (200°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

Prepare

  1. Prepare the pie crust and line the pan.

  2. Place the lined pan in a 400°F (200°C) oven and let it brown slightly.

Assemble and bake

  1. Layer slices of mutton and small potatoes in the crust.

  2. Add 2 tablespoons of butter on top.

  3. Make dumplings from biscuit dough, rolling it thin and cutting into strips 1.5 inches long.

  4. Season with salt and pepper.

  5. Just before adding the upper crust, pour in enough warm water to cover the filling.

  6. Place the upper crust on top and bake.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Mutton
Provides the rich, savoury meat base of the filling.
Potatoes
Add starch and bulk, softening as they cook in the filling.
Butter
Adds fat and richness to the filling.
Biscuit dough
Forms dumplings that cook into soft, tender pieces in the filling.

The step that matters

Pouring in the warm water before the upper crust. Enough liquid must cover the filling so the meat and potatoes cook through and do not dry out, while the crust bakes. Adding the water just before covering keeps the crust from becoming soggy beforehand.

Swap the potato
