Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Potatoes
Provide starch and body that gives the bread its moist, soft texture.
Yeast
Ferments sugars to produce gas, making the mixture rise and become light.
Sugar
Feeds the yeast and supplies sweetness during fermentation.
Hops
Add a bitter, aromatic flavour and help preserve the mixture.

The step that matters

Breaking in the yeast when warm. If the liquid is too hot, it can kill the yeast; if too cool, fermentation is slow. Yeast works best when the mixture is warm but not hot.

Swap the potato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (hops, sugar):

  1. Mustardfits better
  2. Cucumberfits about as well
  3. Capsicumfits about as well
  4. Potatothe original

Fit is the average pairing score against hops, sugar. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
