Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Whipping cream
Whipped into stiff foam that forms the light, creamy filling of the pie.
Confectioners’ sugar
Dissolves easily into the whipped cream, sweetening the filling without grittiness.
Bananas
Provide the fruity flavor and a soft layer that sits beneath and on top of the cream.

The step that matters

Whip the cream until stiff. Cream must be whipped to stiff peaks so it holds its shape and does not weep or slump under the banana layers. Overwhipping can turn it grainy, while underwhipping leaves a loose filling.

Swap the banana

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (cream, vanilla, sugar):

  1. Strawberryfits better
  2. Raspberryfits about as well
  3. Figfits about as well
  4. Bananathe original

Fit is the average pairing score against cream, vanilla, sugar. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
