What each ingredient does

Sugar
Sweetens the fruit and, when boiled, thickens the mixture into a preserve.
Pineapple
Adds tart, tropical flavor and body to the preserve.
Cherries
Contribute sweet-tart flavor and color to the preserve.
Strawberries
Add fruity aroma and bright flavor, cooked in briefly to keep some texture.
Blanched almonds
Add crunch and nutty flavor to the preserve.

The step that matters

Stirring while the fruit boils. Sugar-rich mixtures near the bottom of a kettle can scorch quickly, and burnt sugar gives bitter flavor. Constant stirring spreads heat evenly and keeps the fruit from sticking while it thickens.
