Chocolate Cake

Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. Cream the butter in a large bowl.

  3. Gradually add the powdered sugar, mixing well.

  4. Beat in the eggs, then add the milk.

  5. In a separate bowl, mix the flour with the baking powder.

  6. Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing until smooth.

  7. For the filling, melt the chocolate with 6 tablespoons of hot water and 6 tablespoons of powdered sugar in a saucepan over low heat until smooth.

  8. Remove from heat and fold in the stiffly beaten egg whites and remaining sugar.

  9. Spread the filling between the layers of the cake.
