Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cabbage
Forms the bulk of the soup and turns soft and mild as it simmers.
Butter
Adds richness and a rounded flavour to the broth.
Milk
Adds creaminess and softens the soup's sharper flavours.
Bread
Soaks up the broth and gives the soup a soft, substantial texture.

The step that matters

Stir in the milk and bring to a boil. Milk can scorch on the base of the pan or curdle when heated hard. Keep stirring and bring it up to a boil gently while watching closely.
