Chicken Pot-Pie

Ingredients

Directions

Prepare the pot

  1. Butter the bottom and sides of a pot generously to prevent sticking.

  2. Line the pot with a rich pastry, reserving some for the top crust and small pieces.

Layer the filling

  1. Layer half the ham or salt pork in the pot, season with pepper, and cover with pieces of chicken.

  2. If using, add a layer of sliced parboiled potatoes next to the pastry pieces.

  3. Repeat layering with remaining pork and chicken until all ingredients are used.

Cook and serve

  1. Cover with thick rolled-out pastry and make a slit in the middle.

  2. Heat slowly and boil for two hours.

  3. Turn the pot-pie into a large dish, placing the lower crust on top and pouring the gravy around it.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Chicken
Provides the main meat and savoury flavour of the filling as it simmers.
Ham or salt pork
Adds salty, savoury flavour and fat that seasons the chicken and gravy.
Pastry
Forms the rich lining and crust that encloses the filling while it cooks.
Potatoes
Add starch and body to the filling, helping it feel more substantial when served.

The step that matters

Heat slowly and boil for two hours. Starting gently and keeping a steady simmer lets the chicken become tender without toughening its proteins. Boiling too hard can break up the meat and make the gravy cloudy.

Swap the potato

The recipe marks potato as optional. How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chicken, ham, pepper):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Tomatofits about as well
  3. Mustardfits about as well
  4. Potatothe original

Fit is the average pairing score against chicken, ham, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
