Ingredients

Directions

Prepare the toast

  1. Slice the bread into ⅓ inch thick triangles.

  2. Toast the bread delicately on one side only.

  3. For each sandwich, use three pieces of toast.

Assemble

  1. Place one slice of toast, toasted side down, on a plate.

  2. Layer a slice of ham, a lettuce leaf, and a generous spread of mayonnaise on the toast.

  3. Add a second slice of toast, then layer with chicken, lettuce, and more mayonnaise.

  4. Top with the third slice of toast, toasted side up.

  5. Optionally, use thinly sliced, crisp broiled bacon instead of ham.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

White bread
Provides the crisp toasted structure that holds the layers together.
Mayonnaise
Adds fat and moisture, binding the fillings and enriching the flavour.
Boiled ham
Supplies savoury, salty flavour and the main protein layer.
Chicken
Adds a mild, tender meat layer that adds substance to the sandwich.
Lettuce
Adds cool crispness and moisture that contrasts with the warm-toned toast.

The step that matters

Toast the bread delicately on one side only. Toasting only one side keeps the untoasted face soft enough to bite and lets the toasted side resist moisture from the mayonnaise, so the layers stay crisp rather than soggy.

Swap the lettuce

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (ham, chicken, bread):

  1. Tomatofits better
  2. Onionfits better
  3. Asparagusfits better
  4. Lettucethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against ham, chicken, bread. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
