Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Potatoes
Provide the starch and body that thicken the soup as they break down.
Butter
Adds fat and flavor for sautéing the onion.
Onion
Adds sweetness and aroma when browned in butter.
Flour
Thickens the soup with the mashed potatoes as it combines with the liquid.

The step that matters

Sauté the onion until golden brown. Browning the onion in butter develops sweet, savory flavors through the Maillard reaction. Pale or burnt onion changes the soup's flavor noticeably, so watch the color closely.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (potato, butter, flour):

  1. Chivefits better
  2. Leekfits better
