Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Potatoes
Form the bulk of the salad and absorb the dressing as they cool and soften.
Mayonnaise
Adds creamy richness and moisture that binds the salad together.
Oil
Carries flavour and adds fat, giving the dressing a smooth, rounded body.
Vinegar
Adds acidity that brightens the dressing and balances the richness of oil and mayonnaise.
Cucumber
Adds crisp texture and fresh moisture to the salad.

The step that matters

Drain and dry the potatoes before dressing them. Surface water dilutes the dressing and stops it clinging to the potato pieces, so the salad turns watery and bland. Drying near air flow lets the surface dry before cutting and dressing.

Swap the clove

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (potato, cucumber, onion, garlic, vinegar, parsley):

  1. Dillfits better
  2. Thymefits better
  3. Tarragonfits better
  4. Clovethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against potato, cucumber, onion, garlic, vinegar, parsley. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
