What each ingredient does

White silver-skin onions
Provide the main body and sweet, mild flavour of the dish.
Butter
Adds richness and a silky mouthfeel when melted over the cooked onions.
Coarse sea salt
Seasons the cooking water so the onions taste seasoned throughout.

The step that matters

Boil slowly until tender. A gentle simmer cooks the onions evenly and keeps them intact, while a hard boil can break them apart and leave the outer layers mushy before the centre softens.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, pepper):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Potatofits better
