Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Celery
Softens into the pureed base, adding body and its own savory flavor to the soup.
Potatoes
Break down when stewed and rubbed through, thickening the soup and giving it a smooth texture.
Cream
Adds richness and a silky mouthfeel to the finished soup.
Onions
Contribute aromatic savory flavor to the stewed base.

The step that matters

Adding the hot cream just before serving. Cold cream added to very hot soup can curdle or separate, and heating the cream gently in hot water first keeps the soup smooth and creamy.
