What each ingredient does

Neufchatel cheese
Forms the creamy, soft base that holds the filling together and gives it body.
Cream or french dressing
Moistens the cheese so it becomes spreadable and easier to shape and slice.
Chopped nut meats
Add crunch and a rich, nutty flavour that contrasts with the soft cheese.
Olives
Add salty, briny flavour that cuts through the richness of the cheese.
Whole tomatoes
Serve as the juicy, acidic shell that holds the cheese filling.

The step that matters

Chill the cheese roll before slicing. Soft cheese stays firm when cold, so chilling lets the roll hold its shape and cut into clean, even slices instead of smearing or crumbling.

Swap the lettuce

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (cheese, meat, olive, cream, tomato):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Potatofits better
  3. Spinachfits about as well
