The pairs that carry this dish. Each one is judged two ways: how much their aromas overlap, and how often cooks already put them together.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

White celery
Provides the main flavour and body of the soup as it stews and is strained.
Onion
Adds savoury sweetness and aromatic depth to the stock as it softens.
Veal stock
Forms the liquid base, carrying flavour and giving the soup its richness.

The step that matters

Rubbing the vegetables through a sieve. Pressing the softened vegetables pushes pulp through the mesh, which gives the soup its smooth body. Skipping or rushing this leaves fibres and a thin, grainy texture.

Swap the mace

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (celery, onion, pepper, veal):

  1. Parsleyfits better
  2. Thymefits better
  3. Sagefits better
  4. Macethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against celery, onion, pepper, veal. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
