Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Chestnuts
Provide the starchy, mealy body that thickens the soup into a purée.
Clear soup
Adds savory liquid in which the chestnuts soften and break down.
Butter
Adds richness and a silky mouthfeel to the finished soup.

The step that matters

Boil the chestnuts until mealy. Chestnuts must be cooked until their starch softens fully; undercooked nuts stay grainy and will not purée smoothly through a sieve.

Swap the chestnut

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, pepper):

  1. Walnutfits better
  2. Black-eyed peafits better
  3. Almondfits better
  4. Chestnutthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
