Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cucumbers
Form the bulk of the compote, softening into tender pieces while holding their shape.
Sugar
Sweetens the dish and builds the syrup that the cucumbers absorb.
Cinnamon
Adds warm aroma to the syrup and the cucumbers.

The step that matters

Resting overnight in syrup. Sugar slowly draws syrup into the cucumber pieces as they rest, which sets the color and sweetness. Rushing this step or skipping the second boil can leave the pieces pale and less flavorful.

Swap the cucumber

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (sugar, cinnamon):

  1. Sweet potatofits better
  2. Arrowrootfits better
  3. Beetrootfits better
  4. Cucumberthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against sugar, cinnamon. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
