Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Coconut
Provides the main body and texture of the dish as thin shreds.
1 pound loaf sugar
Forms the syrup that coats and sweetens the coconut shreds.
Lemon juice
Adds acidity that brightens the sweet syrup and helps keep the coconut pale.

The step that matters

Boil the sugar to the blow and pearl stages. Sugar syrup concentration sets how the coconut firms and coats. Boiling too little leaves it watery, while boiling too far makes it hard and sticky, so stage timing matters.

Swap the coconut

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (sugar, lemon):

  1. Orangefits better
  2. Limefits better
  3. Vanillafits better
  4. Coconutthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against sugar, lemon. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
