Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Split peas
Break down during boiling to thicken the soup and give it body.
Flour
Mixed with water and boiled into the soup to thicken it further.
Bacon or roast beef bones
Release savory flavour into the soup as it simmers.
Celery
Adds aromatic flavour to the broth and a fresh vegetable note.

The step that matters

Boil until reduced to 2 quarts. Reducing the liquid concentrates the flavour and sets the body of the soup. Stopping too early leaves it thin and watery, while boiling too long can scorch it on the bottom of the pot.

Swap the peas

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, celery, turnip, flour, pepper, bread):

  1. Lentilsfits better
