Cocoa-nut Candles
Ingredients
Directions
Cut cocoa-nut oil into pieces 2 feet long, 3-4 inches wide, and 1.5 inches thick.
Wrap each piece in linen, then in sail cloth.
Place the wrapped pieces in a hydraulic press at 50-60°F (10-15°C).
Collect the oil that comes through the cloth, leaving the stearine behind.
Put the stearine in a covered boiler in a water bath.
Add 2% by weight of diluted sulphuric acid (2% acid to 6 parts water).
Boil to coagulate and precipitate impurities, then skim, strain, and filter while warm.
Allow to settle in cold to obtain a firm substance for candles.
Mould the candles in the usual way.
