Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs
What each ingredient does
- Almonds
- Form the main crunchy body of the snack once fried until crisp.
- Butter
- Conducts heat into the nuts and adds richness and golden browning during frying.
The step that matters
Frying until pale gold. Almonds keep darkening after they leave the pan because residual heat continues cooking them. Removing them when they are crisp and pale gold helps prevent a bitter, over-browned flavour.
Swap the almond
How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, pepper):
- Walnutfits about as well
- Black-eyed peafits about as well
- Almondthe original
- Lima beansfits about as well
Fit is the average pairing score against butter, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
