Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Beef chuck
Becomes tender through slow cooking, giving the curry its main body and substance.
Flour
Coats the beef so it browns well and helps thicken the sauce.
Tomato sauce
Provides the liquid base and a mild acidity that balances the curry spices.
Curry powder
Supplies the warm, aromatic spice flavor that defines the dish.
Onion
Adds sweetness and savory depth as it softens into the sauce.
Green beans
Add freshness and a crisp-tender texture to the rich stew.

The step that matters

Brown the floured beef well. Browning in hot oil develops deep flavor through the Maillard reaction. Crowded or wet beef steams instead, leaving the sauce pale and flat.

Swap the clove

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, flour, onion, garlic, pepper, tomato, sauce):

  1. Cuminfits better
  2. Oreganofits better
  3. Capersfits better
  4. Clovethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against beef, flour, onion, garlic, pepper, tomato, sauce. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
