Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

All-purpose flour
Forms the structure of the dough once it is bound with egg.
Butter
Cut into the flour to make the dough crumbly and tender, adding richness.
Egg
Binds the dough together so it can be formed into a ball and shaped.
Cinnamon apple sauce
Provides moisture and sweet apple flavor for the filling.
Walnuts
Add crunch and nutty flavor to the topping.

The step that matters

Fill and shape the dough before baking. The indentation must be deep enough to hold the apple sauce without overflowing. Chilled dough is easier to shape cleanly, so keeping it cold helps the strips hold their form in the oven.

Swap the apple

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (flour, sugar, butter, egg, cinnamon, sauce, walnut):

  1. Raisinfits better
  2. Vanillafits better
  3. Figfits better
  4. Applethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against flour, sugar, butter, egg, cinnamon, sauce, walnut. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
