Directions

Prepare the pepper

  1. Remove core, stem and seed from pepper.

  2. Cut pepper lengthwise into 1-inch wide strips.

  3. Cut pepper strips crosswise into 1/2-inch pieces – they'll be the fingernails.

  4. Round corners on one end of pepper.

Prepare the fingers

  1. Cut mozzarella sticks in half crosswise – they'll be the fingers.

  2. Round corners on one end of sticks and cut out a 1/2-inch square notch – you'll put the pepper fingernails here.

Assemble and bake

  1. Place pizza crusts on a baking sheet.

  2. Spread pizza sauce over each crust.

  3. Place 3 cheese fingers on each crust.

  4. Fit a red pepper fingernail onto each cheese finger.

  5. Bake for 8 minutes or until cheese just begins to melt (don't let the cheese fingers melt completely).

  6. Serve to kids who want a bloody treat.

    Shared aroma: ethanol (alcoholic, ethereal).

Pepper and sauce barely smell alike, yet cooks put them together in 15,303 recipes: they work on texture and structure more than aroma.

What each ingredient does

Red bell pepper
Supplies the crisp, bright red pieces that form the fingernails.
Mozzarella sticks
Melt gently to form the soft, stretchy cheese fingers.
Pizza crusts
Provide the base that holds the sauce and toppings while baking.
Pizza sauce
Adds moisture and tangy tomato flavor under the cheese.

The step that matters

Bake for 8 minutes or until cheese just begins to melt. Mozzarella melts and spreads quickly once it gets hot. Pulling the pan when the cheese just starts to soften keeps the fingers shaped and prevents them from running together into the sauce.
