Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs
What each ingredient does
- Butter
- Adds fat that makes the dough short and tender rather than tough.
- Flour
- Provides the structure that holds the jumbles together as they bake.
- Sifted sugar
- Adds sweetness and helps the cookies brown lightly in the oven.
- Almonds
- Add nutty aroma and flavour, and their paste adds body to the dough.
The step that matters
Rolling the dough thin. Dough rolled too thick bakes unevenly and stays doughy in the centre, while a thin layer cooks through and browns evenly in a quick oven.
