Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Rolled oats
Form the bulk and chewy base of the granola.
Honey
Adds sweetness and binds the oats into clusters as it sets.
Cooking oil
Adds fat that helps the granola toast and turn crisp.
Molasses
Adds sweetness, deeper flavor, and browning to the mixture.
Currants or raisins
Add chewy texture and concentrated sweetness to the finished granola.

The step that matters

Stir during baking and cooling. Stirring every 15 minutes exposes the oats to heat evenly so the mixture dries and browns uniformly. Stirring while it cools breaks up clumps as the honey and molasses set, keeping the granola loose rather than one solid slab.

Swap the coconut

The recipe marks coconut as optional. How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (oats, almond, sesame, wheat, honey, currant, dates):

  1. Figfits better
  2. Coconutthe original
  3. Vanillafits about as well
  4. Cherryfits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against oats, almond, sesame, wheat, honey, currant, dates. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
