Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Puff pastry
Its layers puff and separate in the oven, giving the roll-ups a flaky texture.
Egg wash
Its proteins help the pastry brown to a glossy golden color.
Sugar
Caramelizes in the oven, adding sweetness and helping the surface brown.
Powdered sugar
Dissolved in water, it forms a sweet glaze that sets as it cools.

The step that matters

Rolling each square tightly. A loose roll lets the layers separate unevenly and the spice filling spill out. Tight rolling keeps the spiral even so the layers puff uniformly in the oven.

Swap the ginger

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (sugar, egg):

  1. Cinnamonfits better
  2. Nutmegfits better
  3. Gingerthe original
  4. Capersfits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against sugar, egg. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
