Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Pumpkin
Provides the main body, sweetness and smooth texture of the soup.
Potatoes
Starch that thickens the puree and gives it a creamy body.
Cream
Adds fat and richness, softening the flavour and giving a smooth mouthfeel.
Butter
Adds fat for richness and a rounded, silky finish.
Onion
Builds savoury depth as it softens and turns sweet when sauteed.

The step that matters

Heat but do not boil. Boiling a cream-enriched soup can cause the dairy to separate and turn grainy, and it can scorch on the base. Gentle heat keeps the texture smooth.
