What each ingredient does

Boneless round steak
Becomes tender through long simmering, providing the main meaty body of the dish.
Barbecue sauce
Adds sweetness and tang, and its sugars help the sauce darken slightly as it cooks.
Beef broth
Provides the liquid that braises the meat and forms the base of the sauce.
Frozen cut green beans
Add texture and color; they cook through in the simmering broth.
Hot cooked rice
Soaks up the sauce and gives a neutral starchy base for the stew.

The step that matters

Browning the beef. Searing the meat in hot oil until well browned builds deep, savory flavor through the Maillard reaction. Crowding the pan or stopping early leaves the meat grey and steamed, with a flatter taste.

Swap the green beans

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (onion, beef, sauce, garlic, pepper, celery, rice):

  1. Tomatofits better
  2. Carrotfits better
  3. Potatofits better
  4. Green beansthe original
