Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Potatoes
Break down partly as they simmer, giving the soup body and a starchy, thickening texture.
Spaghetti noodles
Absorb liquid as they cook, adding bulk and body to the soup.
Tomatoes
Provide the main liquid and acidity, forming the soup's base flavour.
Tomato puree
Concentrates tomato flavour and adds colour and depth to the broth.

The step that matters

Keep the soup covered with liquid while simmering. Noodles and potatoes absorb water as they cook. If the liquid drops below them, they cook unevenly and can stick or scorch on the bottom of the pot, so adding water as needed keeps the texture even.

Swap the peas

The recipe marks peas as optional. How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (tomato, potato):

  1. Beansfits better
  2. Chickpeafits better
  3. Peanutfits better
  4. Peasthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against tomato, potato. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
