Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Mashed cooked sweet potatoes
Provides the main body and moisture of the casserole filling.
Egg whites
Set during baking to give the filling structure and a custard-like firmness.
Brown sugar
Adds sweetness and moisture, and helps the topping brown.
Chilled margarine
Cut into the flour so the topping becomes crumbly and rich rather than dense.
Pecans
Add crunch and a toasty flavor to the crumbly topping.

The step that matters

Cut in the chilled margarine until coarse meal forms. Keeping the fat cold and in small pieces makes the topping crumbly and crisp; melted or overworked fat blends into the flour and turns the topping dense and greasy.

Swap the pecans

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (sweet potato, sugar, milk, vanilla, egg, flour):

  1. Almondfits better
  2. Chestnutfits better
  3. Milletfits better
  4. Pecansthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against sweet potato, sugar, milk, vanilla, egg, flour. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
