Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Lean ground beef
Forms the patties and provides the main savory flavor and meaty structure.
Egg
Binds the meat mixture so the patties hold their shape while cooking.
Soft breadcrumbs
Absorb moisture and keep the patties tender rather than dense.
Condensed cream of celery soup
Forms a creamy sauce that moistens the patties as they bake.
Stewed tomatoes
Add acidity and tomato flavor to the sauce.

The step that matters

Cover, reduce heat to 350°F, and continue baking 30 minutes. Covering traps steam and lowers the heat, so the patties cook through gently and stay moist while the sauce simmers. Uncovered high heat would dry the surface and toughen the meat.

Swap the oregano

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, onion, garlic, egg, sauce, cream, celery):

  1. Tarragonfits better
  2. Parsleyfits better
  3. Capersfits better
  4. Oreganothe original

Fit is the average pairing score against beef, onion, garlic, egg, sauce, cream, celery. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
