What each ingredient does

Soy mozzarella
Melts and browns on top, giving the pizza its gooey, golden surface.
Commercial tomato sauce
Forms the moist base layer that flavors the crust beneath the toppings.
Pizza crust
Provides the base structure that holds the sauce and toppings while baking.
Onion
Softens and turns sweet as it cooks, adding aroma and mild sweetness.

The step that matters

Sautéing the meat until hot and slightly crispy. Browning the meat before baking drives off excess moisture and builds flavor. Crowding the pan or stopping early leaves it steamed and pale, which can make the pizza soggy.
