Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Eggs
Provide structure and binding, and help the cake set as it bakes.
Honey
Adds sweetness, moisture and a deeper golden browning.
Butter
Adds fat for a tender crumb and rich flavour.
Flour
Forms the gluten network that gives the cake its body.

The step that matters

Kneading the flour into the dough. Stirring in the flour gradually and kneading only until homogeneous keeps the dough even. Overworking flour that contains gluten can make the cake tough and dense.
