Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Dried black beans
Form the main body of the dish, becoming tender and creamy as they simmer.
Onion
Adds aromatic sweetness and savory depth to the cooking liquid.
Garlic
Contributes pungent aroma that mellows during the long simmer.
Celery and carrots
Release flavor into the broth, adding background sweetness and aroma before being removed.

The step that matters

Keep the beans submerged while simmering. Beans exposed to air during simmering can split and toughen on the surface. Adding water as needed keeps them cooking evenly until tender.

Swap the beans

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (onion, celery, carrot, pepper, clove, garlic, thyme):

  1. Chickpeafits better
  2. Lentilsfits about as well
  3. Black-eyed peafits about as well
  4. Beansthe original
