What each ingredient does

Beef round steak
Becomes tender as it simmers in the sauce, providing the main protein.
All-purpose flour
Coats the beef so it browns well and helps thicken the sauce.
Ketchup
Adds sweetness and acidity that balance the savory sauce.
Worcestershire sauce
Adds savory depth and tang to the sauce.
White potatoes
Absorb the sauce and add starch and body to the skillet dish.
White onion
Softens and sweetens as it browns, adding savory flavor to the sauce.

The step that matters

Simmer the beef until tender. Round steak is lean and firm, so it needs a gentle, covered simmer over low heat to break down its connective tissue. Boiling hard toughens the meat and can make the sauce reduce too quickly.

Swap the green beans

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, flour, onion, potato, ketchup, sauce, pepper):

  1. Horseradishfits better
  2. Chivefits better
  3. Capsicumfits better
  4. Green beansthe original
