Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Potatoes
Provide the starchy pulp that mashes into a fluffy base and forms the shells.
Butter
Adds fat for richness and a smoother, silkier mashed texture.
Milk
Adds moisture so the mashed potato filling spreads and stays soft.
Sour cream
Adds moisture and tang, making the filling creamier and richer.
Cheddar cheese
Adds fat and flavor, and its proteins and sugars brown under the broiler.

The step that matters

Broiling the filled potatoes. Broilers brown very fast from intense direct heat. Cheese and potato surfaces can go from spotty brown to burnt in moments, so watch them closely while they crisp.
