Why it works: Cream and nutmeg are a kitchen classic. They rank in the top 13% of all ingredient pairs, and cooks put them together in 7,920 recipes. Both carry acetic acid, which smells sour, vinegar. The science ↓
Galliano Hot Shot
Ingredients
Directions
Pour the espresso coffee first.
Using a teaspoon, hold it at a slant above the coffee, without touching it. Gently and slowly pour the Galliano onto the spoon so it seeps past the coffee on the side of the shooter glass. If done properly, the Galliano will seep to the bottom, creating a layered effect.
Top with whipped cream.
Optionally, sprinkle a dash of nutmeg on top.
Serve as a shot drink.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs
What each ingredient does
- Espresso coffee
- Forms the dark base layer that the Galliano settles beneath.
- Galliano
- Adds sweetness and vanilla-anise aroma, and forms the layer that sinks to the bottom.
- Whipped cream
- Adds a soft, creamy texture and mellows the bitterness of the espresso.
The step that matters
Pouring the Galliano over the spoon. Pouring too fast or letting the spoon touch the coffee breaks the layer, because the liquids mix. A slow pour over a slanted spoon lets the Galliano, which is less dense than the coffee, seep in gently and separate.
Swap the nutmeg
The recipe marks nutmeg as optional. How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (coffee, cream):
- Nutmegthe original
- Cinnamonfits about as well
- Celeryfits less well
- Peppermintfits less well
Fit is the average pairing score against coffee, cream. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
