Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Frozen hash browns
Provide the starchy bulk that becomes tender and holds the casserole together.
Sour cream
Adds moisture and richness, keeping the casserole creamy rather than dry.
Cheddar cheese soup
Supplies moisture, salt and cheese flavor, and helps bind the casserole into a creamy mass.
Cream of potato soup
Adds moisture and body, thickening the mixture as it bakes.
Shredded cheddar cheese
Melts into the sauce and browns on top, adding flavor and a golden crust.

The step that matters

Bake uncovered until bubbly and potatoes are tender. Covering traps steam and keeps the top pale, while baking uncovered lets moisture evaporate and the surface brown. Cooking until the potatoes are fully tender ensures the starch has softened throughout, not just at the edges.
