What each ingredient does

All-purpose flour
Provides the starch and gluten network that gives the cake its structure.
Granulated sugar
Sweetens the cake and helps the batter brown in the oven.
Stick margarine
Adds fat that tenderises the crumb and carries flavour.
Egg
Binds the batter and adds structure as it sets during baking.
Baking apples
Add moisture and fruity tartness while keeping their shape in the chunky cake.

The step that matters

Beating the flour mixture in thirds. Adding the flour in portions and beating until smooth keeps the batter evenly combined and prevents lumps. Overbeating after the flour is in can develop too much gluten and make the cake tough.
