Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Potatoes or hash browns
Form the bulk of the dish and soften into tender layers as they bake.
Cream cheese
Melts into the sauce, adding richness and a smooth, creamy texture.
Condensed soup
Forms the base of the sauce, adding moisture and savory flavor that binds the layers.
Cheddar cheese
Sprinkled on top, it melts and browns slightly for flavor and color.
Onions
Soften during cooking, adding sweetness and savory depth to the sauce.

The step that matters

Cooking the sauce until smooth and hot. Stirring constantly keeps the cream cheese and soup from scorching on the bottom of the pan and helps them blend into a smooth emulsion before layering.
