What each ingredient does

Eggs
Bind the batter and add structure as they set during baking.
Vegetable oil
Keeps the cake moist and tender after it cools.
Flour
Forms the cake's structure once heated and set.
Baking soda
Reacts with the batter to help the cake rise and lighten.
Grated carrots
Add moisture and natural sweetness to the crumb.
Cream cheese
Gives the frosting its tangy flavor and creamy, spreadable body.

The step that matters

Testing for doneness. Bundt cakes with dense grated carrots can look set outside while the center is still wet. A toothpick inserted in the center should come out clean before cooling, since underbaked centers can collapse or turn gummy.

Swap the carrot

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (egg, sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, raisin, cream cheese):

  2. Arrowrootfits better
  3. Shallotfits better
  4. Carrotthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against egg, sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, raisin, cream cheese. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
