Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Shrimp
Provides the main protein, cooked gently so it stays tender and juicy.
Heavy cream
Reduces into a rich, silky sauce that gives body and mouthfeel.
Bacon
Its fat and smoky flavor season the onion, garlic and sauce.
Onion
Softened in bacon fat to build a sweet, savory base for the sauce.
Garlic
Softened in bacon fat to add aroma to the sauce base.
Shrimp stock
Adds concentrated seafood flavor and liquid that reduces into the sauce.

The step that matters

Cooking the shrimp in the sauce. Shrimp turn rubbery quickly when overcooked, so they are only partly cooked in the pan and then gently finished in the sauce until just done.

Swap the clove

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (onion, garlic, shrimp, cream, butter, pepper, lime):

  1. Parsleyfits better
  2. Corianderfits better
  3. Thymefits better

Fit is the average pairing score against onion, garlic, shrimp, cream, butter, pepper, lime. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
