Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Onion
Browning slowly to a sticky mass builds the dip's deep, sweet savory flavor.
Sour cream
Provides the creamy body and tangy base of the dip.
Bouillon cube
Adds concentrated savory, salty flavor as the liquid reduces and thickens.
Vegetable oil
Carries heat so the onion softens and browns evenly without sticking.

The step that matters

Sauté until golden-brown. Onion cooked slowly over higher heat browns through the Maillard reaction and caramelization, creating sweetness and depth. Stopping too early leaves a flat, raw-onion taste, so the color and sticky texture matter.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (cream, pepper):

  1. Spinachfits better
  2. Capsicumfits better
  3. Potatofits better
  4. Onionthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against cream, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
