Why it works: Onion and garlic match in chemistry and in kitchens. They rank in the top 1% of all ingredient pairs, and cooks put them together in 29,058 recipes. Both carry furaneol, which smells caramel, strawberry. The science ↓

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs
What each ingredient does
- Ground turkey
- Provides the main protein and browns to add savory flavor.
- Onion
- Softens and turns sweet as it cooks, building the base flavor.
- Cabbage
- Wilts as it cooks, adding bulk and a mild sweetness.
- Soy sauce
- Adds salty, savory depth that seasons the whole stir-fry.
- Garlic
- Adds aroma and pungency that mellows as it cooks.
The step that matters
Check the turkey's internal temperature. Ground turkey can look browned before it is fully cooked. Confirming 74 °C (165 °F) with a thermometer ensures it is safe, since color alone is not a reliable guide.
Swap the cabbage
How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (canola oil, turkey, cumin, carrot, onion, clove, garlic):
- Spinachfits better
- Capsicumfits better
- Shallotfits better
- Cabbagethe original
Fit is the average pairing score against canola oil, turkey, cumin, carrot, onion, clove, garlic. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
