What each ingredient does

Eggs
Bind the milk and coating so the bread cooks into a set, custard-like crust.
Bran flakes
Crushed flakes form a crisp, browned coating on the outside of the bread.
Whole grain bread
Soaks up the egg mixture and forms the soft interior of each stick.
Skim milk
Adds moisture to the egg coating, keeping the inside tender.
Pineapple
Adds juicy fruit moisture and sweetness to the warm topping.
Navel orange
Adds bright acidity and aroma to the fruit topping.

The step that matters

Cook the coated bread over medium-high heat until golden. Egg-soaked bread browns quickly on the outside, so heat that is too high can scorch the bran coating before the centre sets. Turning once at the right time gives an even golden crust.

Swap the orange

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (milk, egg, vanilla, cinnamon, bread, sugar, pineapple):

  1. Figfits better
  2. Peachfits better
  3. Pearfits better
  4. Orangethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against milk, egg, vanilla, cinnamon, bread, sugar, pineapple. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
