What each ingredient does

Cornstarch
Thickens the milk into a set, sliceable custard as it cooks.
Eggs
Egg yolks enrich and help set the custard; whites form the meringue topping.
Milk
Forms the liquid base of the custard that the cornstarch thickens.
Butter
Adds richness and a smoother mouthfeel to the finished custard.
Cocoanut
Contributes coconut flavour and body to the custard.

The step that matters

Cook the custard after adding the cornstarch. Cornstarch must be moistened in cold milk first to avoid lumps, then cooked long enough for its starch granules to swell and thicken the custard fully.
